Do Good Hero Nomination: Will Reiber, Captain at Aberdeen Police Department

Nominee:

Will Reiber, Captain
Aberdeen Police Department
Aberdeen, MD

About Will Reiber

Will Reiber was nominated by his friend and board partner, Ryan Behnken of Worthington Financial Partners.

Captain Reiber joined the Aberdeen Police Department on August 4th, 2006. Over the last 15 years, he has been promoted five times, most recently to Captain on February 26th, 2023. He is also APD's lead Public Information Officer. In this role, he addresses the community and media during press conferences when necessary.

His Senior Administrative Specialist at APD, Jennifer Liberto, said "Will is detail-oriented in everything he does. He is very personable and dependable."

As a representative of APD, Captain Reiber has volunteered his time DJing neighboring school events. In addition to his full-time job, he volunteers at two community organizations: Harford Family House and The Fallston Club.

Robin Tomechko, CEO of Harford Family House, had the following to say about Captain Reiber:

"Will has been a Board member with Harford Family House for four years. He has been an active member of our Program Committee and has served as Co-Chair of our Off the Streets fundraiser and homelessness awareness event for the past three years. He is a member of the Board that you can always count on, and he has helped us generate significant awareness and funds through his various connections and resources.

Will is a true advocate for those who experience homelessness in our community and has been instrumental in championing the cause to his Chief, the Aberdeen Mayor, and other community leaders who may be able to effect positive change and increase affordable housing for those in our community who desperately need it.

Will never hesitates to come when called to handle an "emergency" with a client, give a pep-talk to a young unaccompanied adult in our program, provide fun event-modeling, pro-bono DJ services when hosting family-friendly events for our clients, or increased security at Harford Family House when staff are feeling unsafe.

However, before his board involvement, Will had always had a soft spot for the organization. He has been very active as a participant and recruiter in our Home Runs for the Homeless event, ensuring that police officers from all over the County participated in this home-run-derby type fundraising event, and initially even suggested that there be an Officer's Cup award for the police department that has the top score each year. Will and the Aberdeen Police Department have received this very coveted recognition many times over the years. Still today, Will actively participates in this event and swings to the fences at Leidos Field with other members of his APD team each year to try to win the trophy! Will has also used his persuasive ways to recruit additional members from the local police departments to support this worthy cause which is very near and dear to his heart. He serves as a role model to each of us and is a community hero to many!"

HFH Board Chair Elizabeth Mosser had the following to say about Captain Reiber:

"We can highlight Will's integral work in supporting the staff and the clients of HFH. For the former, he is either personally involved or serves as the conduit to the APD when we need assistance with disruptive and/or unsafe circumstances at our properties. To assist with helping stabilize families during their time at HFH, Will serves as an essential role model at our various events and ensures we have additional representation from the APD to engage with clients and encourage positive client-community relations at many of our family-focused events like trunk-or-treat. Will's involvement also means HFH has the ongoing support of the APD during events such as Off the Streets.

The Fallston Club is our 50-plus-year-old neighborhood swim and tennis club. Will joined me on this board two years ago, and we became fast friends. He sits on the HR sub-committee with me and played a vital part this past year as we needed to hire a new management team. Elsewhere, Will is quick to lend a helping hand in all projects ranging from emceeing our Summer End party with 10 minutes' notice, securing police presence when needed, or scaling a 20-foot fence to cut decade-old vines- just for aesthetic purposes. He brings positivity and professionalism to everything he does.

Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't share his love for his wife, Carrie, and son, Brooks. They are all up at the Fallston Club during the summer, enjoying time with friends. Further, Brooks is an excellent baseball player, and Will and Carrie spend much of their time traveling with their son to games and practices. Will is the epitome of what this award standards for- leadership, positivity, and strength."
