About City of Thornton Fire Department

Thornton Fire Department was nominated by Amy VanDerBroek of Five Rings Financial.

The personnel of Thornton Fire Department always go above and beyond to serve their community. They have innovative ideas and tons of engagement with the community that they serve. Here are some of the things that they have done.

  • They spearheaded a COVID testing site and vaccination clinics during the pandemic that other fire departments implemented in their own cities and states. They received the 2021 Congressional Fire Service Institute/Masimo Excellence in Fire Service-Based EMS Award in DC for their innovative and community-driven approach to addressing COVID through community testing, vaccinations, and telehealth programs.
  • They currently have a Test to Treat program to help treat residents that may be sick with the flu with IV hydration and medicine.
  • EMTs and firefighters volunteer for the fire program at the local Future Forward tech school.
  • They hosted a drive to collect items for Welcome baskets for migrants and refugees.
  • They host a yearly Citizens Fire Academy to increase citizens' knowledge and understanding of the fire department's daily and emergency operations. The Academy also promotes citizen interaction with firefighters and paramedics.
  • They set up Thornton Fire Foundation, a 501(c)(3) to assist needy citizens, such as fire victims, and benefit public education programs to promote fire safety.
  • Food drives
  • Prescription drug takeback events
  • Car seat checkups
  • Last but not least, several of their firefighters volunteer yearly for a local firefighter and puppy calendar to raise money for Lifeline Puppy Rescue in Colorado. Firefighters volunteer for photo shoots and community events. Several photoshoots have taken place at Thornton Fire Stations, with other staff on shift also helping.
