About James Daniel Poole

James Daniel Poole was nominated by Lewis Morrell and Kevin Zebrowski of Protection Red.

Assistant Chief James D. Poole began his career with the Raleigh Fire Department on September 18, 1978, and he is presently the longest-serving member of the department. He was one of the first Raleigh firefighters to receive his EMT certification, and he was a founding member of the department's hazardous materials and urban search and rescue programs. A certified instructor and probationary level III fire inspector are just two of his many certifications. As he rose through the chief ranks, he continued to maintain all the certifications he earned throughout his career.

Presently, Chief Poole is the department's Logistics Chief. Previously, he served as the Professional Development Chief and the Operations Chief. Chief Poole holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science from Durham Community College. He received the Managing the Fire Service certificate from the UNC School of Government, Training Institute of International City Management. Through the years, he has attended numerous classes at the National Fire Academy and served on the Durham Technical Community College Fire Protection Advisory Board.

Chief Poole's altruism and dedication to his community are evident in his role as the current President of the West Raleigh Exchange Club. For 33 years, he has selflessly served his community, particularly as a Little League baseball coach. His passion for mentoring young men, using their shared love of baseball as a platform, is inspiring. Several of his former players, guided by his mentorship, have gone on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels. His success as a coach is evident in the numerous competitions his teams have participated in, spanning several states along the eastern part of the United States, as well as Texas, California, and Minnesota.

Chief Poole's personal life is a testament to his ability to balance his professional and personal responsibilities. He was married to his supportive wife, Donna, for 45 years, and together they were blessed with three children, one of whom is following in his footsteps. In his leisure time, he enjoys engaging in DIY projects around the house and, most importantly, spending quality time with his six grandchildren. This personal aspect of Chief Poole's life underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
