Hempstead Police Department
Hempstead, NY
The Hempstead Police Department was nominated by Salvatore Barretta of Ironhawk Financial. Every day, the Hempstead Police Department demonstrates their commitment to fostering a safe and supportive community through proactive engagement and support services. One of their ongoing community initiatives is The Village of Hempstead Police Activity League (PAL). Established in 1990, the Hempstead PAL offers various programs to provide a safe and constructive environment for youth. Activities include arts and crafts, mentoring, cooking, fitness, lacrosse, track, basketball, double dutch, karate, and bowling. These programs are designed to foster self-confidence and a sense of community among young participants, offering positive alternatives to negative influences such as alcohol, drugs, and gang activity. The department also actively participates in National Night Out, an annual event that promotes police-community partnerships. During this event, officers engage with residents in a relaxed setting, participating in activities like dunk tanks, games with children, and other interactive experiences. The event builds trust and positive relationships between law enforcement and community members. Finally, the department's C.O.P.S. Unit serves as a liaison between the police and local civic associations, community groups, and businesses. Officers in this unit attend community meetings, address quality-of-life concerns, and patrol neighborhoods on foot, bicycle, and in vehicles. They also focus on gang activity, graffiti removal, and false alarm monitoring, working collaboratively with residents to enhance neighborhood safety and cohesion.
