On February 8, 2024, while performing his regular patrol duties as a police sergeant, Sgt. Camp responded to a critical incident involving an armed individual experiencing a severe mental health crisis.
The situation presented an immediate and grave threat to the subject, responding officers, and members of the public. The apartment complex where the incident occurred is known for heavy pedestrian traffic, increasing the risk of tragedy. Officers already on scene had attempted to communicate with the subject, but the situation had become increasingly volatile and confusing. Crisis Intervention personnel were present, but remained in positions of cover due to the danger posed by the armed subject.
Upon arriving at the scene, Sgt. Camp quickly assessed the circumstances and recognized that a different approach was necessary. Drawing upon his extensive training and experience, including a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling and service as a Crisis Management Team Hostage Negotiator, he directed responding officers to stand down and allow him to engage the subject directly.
Understanding the risks involved, Sgt. Camp deliberately placed himself between the armed subject and fellow officers, effectively becoming a human shield to protect both law enforcement personnel and nearby civilians. Despite the risks, Sgt. Camp approached the subject unarmed, with his hands open and visible, demonstrating trust, compassion, and a genuine desire to help.
Through calm communication, empathy, and professional crisis negotiation skills, Sgt. Camp established immediate rapport with the subject. His ability to connect with the subject as a human being rather than merely as an offender transformed the encounter. As a direct result of Sgt. Camp's actions, the situation ended peacefully without injury or loss of life.
Sgt. Camp's actions that day exemplified the highest ideals of public service. He willingly placed his own life in danger to save another person, protect his fellow officers, and safeguard innocent members of the community. His courage, judgment, and commitment to preserving life prevented what could have become a fatal outcome for everyone involved.
When later reflecting on the incident, Sgt. Camp stated, "I had to help, and I had to take the first step to show humanity behind the badge regardless of the risks involved. That's my job."
These words reflect the character, humility, and dedication that define Sgt. Camp's service. His actions on February 8, 2024, represent a remarkable example of bravery, leadership, and compassion under extraordinary circumstances. Because of his intervention, a desperate individual was given a second chance at life and was able to return home to his family and loved ones.
